Last Gasp
I sat beside her, a composition of frailty lying supine beneath a thin blanket. Along with her hospital gown, she donned a huge velvet bow in her wispy hair, a bow that was placed there by someone with more hope than me and the rest of Metropolitan Hospice. Her chest lay flat; her breathing so shallow that she made no movement.
Suddenly, I heard a shrill beeping, the herald of death. Flushed with panic, I ran to get the nurse.
Casually, she said, "Oh, that lady’s fine. Her roommate just pressed the call button, is all."

| In the beginning I thought, "How sad for the little girl. She's gonna die." Then the alarm sounded and I was unhappy with having to read this. Then when the little girl(or was it the nurse?) said what she said. After that I was 'giggling' and smiling. Thank you. :o) |

I love the blue bow - just brought the whole scene to life. And a cracking wee twist.
Thanks for the read and the smiles.
Cheers

| Initially I was a little dissappointed because I felt this was going down the obvious path. It was well written, but was just not enthused because I thought I knew where this was going. You got me BIG time!!! Good job!!! |

Starts off foreshadowing a sad, inescapable death in the beginning, but then shifts to something that makes me smile a little by the end. Good work, way to throw me off!
happy writings. |

| This reminds me of a story I heard while attending a patient in the ICU. One pt. was overheard to say to another: "You see that machine over there going beep, beep, beep. Well, if ever stops, you better start going 'Beep, beep, beep' or there'll be a gang of people in here to beat the sh*t out of you." Apparently he had seen a resuscitation attempt. |
